In new animated movie Wreck-It Ralph, a videogame character goes througn an existential crisis. Tired of playing the villain in an 8-bit game, Ralph defies his programming to explore the wider world of the arcade.

Who better to direct a movie set inside many different videogames than Rich Moore, a longtime director of The Simpsons and Futurama?

As soon as Moore signed on to the project, he knew he needed some recognizable guest stars. So he set out to convince megastudios like Sega and Namco to let their most beloved characters — including Frogger, Pac-Man, Bowser and Sonic — appear in the Disney film. In this episode of the Storyboard podcast, Moore talks to Wired senior editor Caitlin Roper about the artistic and legal challenges of creating an authentic videogame universe, the future of Disney animation and some Easter eggs to look for in Wreck-It Ralph.

Wreck-It Ralph, rated PG, is in theaters now.
